Can We Speak of Ghettos in Czech Cities?

Abstract

This paper covers the processes of ghettoization in socially excluded areas in the Czech Republic that are settled mainly by the Roma. I have attempted to document the logic of ghettoization using the case of an area called Poschla that emerged in Vsetín in 2006. On the basis of semi-structured interviews with inhabitants and social workers, I endeavoured to find out whether Poschla was in the process of ghettoization. From the interviews and other collated data, I searched for signs of ghettoization and social exclusion as we know them from sociological theory, especially drawing from the ideas of Loïc Wacquant.
