Slovo Spotlight: Interview with Typesetter Kexin Cui

Posted by Slovo on 2023-11-12

In the lead up to handing over to the next Slovo Editorial Team, we are running a series of interviews with the current team about the ins and outs of their role and their experience working at Slovo. Applications are open now until 23:59 on the 16th November. Apply through this link. We can't wait to read your applications!

Following our interview with Copyeditor Callie Andress, in which we discussed being the unofficial voice of Slovo over on Spotify, we are chatting with Typesetter Kexin Cui about the important role she plays in ensuring Slovo is up to scratch before publication and managing the workload at crunch time!

Why did you apply for Slovo?

KC: I received an email about the open application for the Slovo team. After learning about it, I was very interested in this journal. I have done similar journal editing work before, and I think it’s a very cool thing to witness the birth of a journal!

Why the role of typesetter?

KC: Actually, the typesetter position is one of the three positions I applied for, but I ultimately chose it, and I have no regrets about my decision. I am very familiar with typesetting work, and I believe I’m capable of handling it. Typesetting is the most fundamental and crucial aspect of journal work, as it directly influences the final appearance of the journal.

How did you find the workload?

KC: I believe the workload is quite acceptable. With proper time management, dedicating a portion of each day to typesetting should be sufficient. As a typesetter, there may be specific periods where the workload is relatively high, but it wouldn’t disrupt my daily routine.

What was the most interesting thing about being on Slovo?

KC: Everyone is very enthusiastic and friendly.  I really enjoy the team atmosphere and the feeling of everyone working together.

What advice would you give to anyone considering applying for Slovo?

KC: Time management is very important. Make sure to set aside enough time for the task, because sometimes the same file will need to be modified multiple times. Don't be shy and don't be afraid, Slovo is a very nice team!

Typesetter main responsibilities:

        •  Ensuring that all manuscripts scheduled for publication are formatted correctly in adherence with Slovo's style.
