Slovo Spotlight: Interview with Online Editor Phoebe Hardingham

Posted by Slovo on 2023-11-15

In the lead up to handing over to the next Slovo Editorial Team, we are running a series of interviews with the current team about the ins and outs of their role and their experience working at Slovo. Applications are open now until 23:59 on the 16th November. Apply through this link. We can't wait to read your applications!

In this blog post, Slovo’s Online Editor interviews herself about her time on the editorial committee and talks about developing a consistent brand identity and how she’s grown in the role during her tenure.

Why did you apply to be on Slovo?

I wanted to gain the experience of working on an academic journal, as well as get to know more people in the department and increase my knowledge of the region!

What have you enjoyed the most about being on Slovo?

I’ve really enjoyed having something creative to do alongside my uni work! It’s also been cool to look back and see how I’ve grown in the role as I’ve got more experimental and confident.

What has been the most satisfying part of your role?

I’m really proud of developing a consistent brand identity on our instagram! When I came to the role there wasn’t a great deal to work with as our logo of a blue square was very minimal. I’ve enjoyed taking that basic shape and seeing how I could riff on it. I find it very satisfying to look through the profile and see how cohesive it looks.

Do you have any regrets?

Not getting the canva pro subscription sorted before I did the introducing the team posts. And posting two Slovo Spotlights back to back without a filler post (it slightly upsets me 💔). I also wish we’d been able to have more in person events!

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of applying for the role?

I would really recommend trying to get into a consistent schedule with posting, making a content calendar and sticking with it. This is something I struggled with a bit this year and would try and do differently. For time management purposes, you can also bulk make posts and then post them as and when you need.
