Abstract
The chance to apply a series of sedimentological techniques in order to answer specific site formational problems relating to a site dating from the Hellenistic and later periods, presented the opportunity to test various sedimentological techniques currently used in northern Europe and to see how useful they are in the Mediterranean environment. The site in question was the acropolis at Sparta, in the Laconia province of the Peloponnese, where excavations have been conducted under the auspices of the British School at Athens since 1989.
