In the lead up to handing over to the next Slovo Editorial Team, we are running a series of interviews with the current team about the ins and outs of their role and their experience working at Slovo. Applications are open now until 23:59 on the 16th November. Apply through this link. We can't wait to read your applications!

Following our interview with Film Editor Haoyang Chen, in which we discussed the connections between creative industries and academia, we are chatting to Copyeditor Callie Andress about her time with on the editorial team and being the unofficial voice of Slovo over on Spotify!

Why did you apply to be on the Slovo Editorial Team?

CA: I thought it would be a good opportunity to gain experience working on an academic journal and read cutting edge pieces on Eastern Europe.

Why the position of Copyeditor?

CA: I love making text shine and it’s a way to get to read all the pieces before they are published.

Did you have prior editing experience?

CA: I’ve worked as a volunteer proofreader/translator for a number of Ukrainian organisations, including Suspilne, Detektor Media, and 1+1 TV channel.

What was the workload like?

CA: I was only busy for the few weeks leading up to publication, I was just about the last step in the process.

What has been your highlight?

CA: I’m also the voice narrating many of the pieces, so that was fun!

Any advice for anyone thinking of applying for a role on the Slovo editorial team?

CA: Make sure the authors and other team members are aware of the style and editing guidelines before it reaches you.

Copyeditor responsibilities:

  • Proofreading text for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style

  • Ensuring that referencing in all manuscripts scheduled for publication adheres to the MHRA style guide
