CALL FOR PAPERS


Slovo Journal is seeking original research papers and reviews at the postgraduate level with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Balkans, Russia, and Ukraine. 


Research Articles: 6000-8000 words

All research articles which focus on the journal’s region of expertise are welcome. However, we strongly encourage research articles connected to the following themes:


– mass media

– languages of the region 

– public policy

– economic and technological transformation

– 20th and 21st century music and / or art 

– decolonisation 

– unusual histories / unusual stories

– interdisciplinary studies  

– Russia’s war in Ukraine 


Film Reviews: 600-800 words


We encourage reviews of films originating in the journal’s region of expertise. However, we are especially interested in reviews of amateur and independent cinema. We would also love to receive reviews of the following:


– ‘Cloud-Paradise’ (Russia, 1990)

– ‘Hanaan’ (Uzbekistan / South Korea, 2011)

– ‘Tomiris’ (Kazakhstan, 2019)

– 'Chernobyl' (HBO Series; 2019)

– ‘Klondike’ (Ukraine, 2022)
– ‘Pamfir’ (Ukraine, 2022)

– '20 Days to Mariupol' (Ukraine, 2023) 


Book Reviews: 600-800 words


We welcome reviews of books which focus on the region, and especially books by authors from the region. We would also encourage reviews of the following:


– ‘Lost Enlightenment: Central Asia’s Golden Age from the Arab Conquest to Tamerlane’ (Frederick Starr, 2013)

– ‘The Emergence and Development of LGBT Protest Activity in Russia’ (Radzhana Buyantueva, 2022)

– ‘On Arid Ground: Political Ecologies of Empire in Russian Central Asia’ (Jennifer Keating, 2022)

– ‘Belarus in Crisis: From Domestic Unrest to the Russia-Ukraine War’ (Paul Hansbury, 2023) 

– ‘Political Technology: The Globalisation of Political Manipulation’ (Andrew Wilson, 2023)


Translations: Max. 8000 words 


Slovo welcomes unpublished translations of texts from the region into English.


Original Poetry or Short Prose: Max. 800 words 


We also welcome poetry or original short prose that is inspired by the region. Poetry or prose written in a foreign language should be submitted with a full translation into English.

Deadline for film reviews, book reviews, poetry and prose: Monday 22nd April 2024, 23:59
