Abstract
It is well known that the emergence of writing is important for the development of societies. The written word, the codification of laws, land registers, censuses, and the recording of rituals and history provide obvious cases emphasizing the difference with customary or oral traditions; writing also allows for record-keeping which stimulates economy and state bureauracies.
